Life Force: Conversations
Mixed Media Collage by Kari Dunn
2014 - 2015
In September of 2014, I was awarded a McKnight Foundation Grant through the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council - the purpose of which was to provide funding for the development of new work in mixed media collage, culminating in a public presentation and exhibition (Rochester Civic Theatre lobby gallery, Rochester, MN, May 7-31, 2015.)
Being afforded seven months of intensive studio time was a dream come true for me - complete with a myriad of joys and challenges, learning, experimentation, and deeper immersion in familiar tools and processes. My work for this exhibit was produced through the development of imagery as it relates to the themes of time, memory, relationships, and the cycle of life. Utilizing photography, digital media, scanned textures, and a mix of papers and printed materials, I sought to create a visual narrative about aspects of the physical and interior worlds in which we live.
In the end result, it is a story about conversations that happen between friends living or dead - both in dreams and in waking - including human friends and family, animals, nature, and my muses, all of which have comprised the life force that has influenced me as a person and as an artist.
